New York Celebrates the Garifuna Intangible Cultural Heritage!On May 18th, 2001 the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the first time awarded the title of “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangibles Heritage of Humanity,” to 19 outstanding cultural spaces of forms of expression from different regions of the world. The Garifuna Language, Dance and Music were among those declared “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangibles Heritage of Humanity.”
In 1823 William Henry Brown authored and staged the Drama of King Shotaway, which is recognized as the first black drama of the American Theatre and has as its subject the 1795 Black Caribs (Garifunas) defense of the Island of Saint Vincent, against colonization led by the Paramount Chief Joseph Chatoyer.
