Mapping the Future: The Garifuna Complete Count Committee and Census 2030
In American democracy, if you are not counted, you do not exist in the eyes of the government. |
For the Garifuna community, data equity is more than just a statistical issue; it is the new front line in our civil rights fight. As we approach the 2030 U.S. Census, the Garifuna Coalition is launching a historic effort to make sure our diaspora is finally seen, heard, and accurately represented.
The urgency of this mission is gaining international attention. This July, Garifuna Coalition Chairman José Francisco Ávila will visit Cali, Colombia, to present his latest research at the Afro-Latin American Research Institute (ALARI) IV Continental Conference at IcesiUniversity.
His paper, titled “¿Y Nosotros Qué? La diáspora garífuna estadounidense y el censo de 2030″(And What About Us? The U.S. Garifuna Diaspora and the 2030 Census), emphasizes a significant gap in U.S. data collection. Although our community has thrived in the United States for more than fifty years, the absence of a specific “Garifuna” checkbox or precise reporting tools has kept our true population numbers hidden.

The “Representation Gap” is the clearest sign of data inequity. Despite an estimated population of over 100,000 in the Bronx alone, there is currently only one Garifuna person holding local elected office in New York State. An accurate Census count in 2030 is the only way to close this gap through:
To meet this challenge, the Coalition has established the Garifuna Complete Count Committee. This grassroots effort aims to educate our community about the significance of the Census and to dispel fears and misconceptions that lead to undercount.
We are shifting from a “hidden” demographic to a statistically undeniable force. But we can’t do this from an office; we need boots on the ground in every building, church, and community center.
The journey to 2030 starts today. We are seeking passionate community members to serve as Local Ambassadors for the Complete Count Committee. As an ambassador, you will receive training on how to assist your neighbors with the Census process and advocate for our community’s right to be counted.
“Our census response is our signature on the future of the Bronx.” — José Francisco Ávila
Don’t be left out. Be counted. Be Garifuna.
