Garifuna Heritage Month 2026: From Celebration to Political Power
Today, April 9, 2026, the New York City Council Chambers will once again echo with the ancestral drums and songs of the Garifuna people. But this year, the atmosphere carries a new weight. The Garifuna Coalition is sending a clear message to those in power: the era of merely symbolic recognition is over. It is time to shift from Heritage to Power.
For decades, Garifuna Heritage Month has been marked by proclamations and cultural displays. While these events are important for raising awareness, they often hide a harsh truth: the Garifuna community remains one of the most underserved and underrepresented groups in New York City.
“We are shifting our strategy from Advocacy—simply asking for a seat at the table—to Accountability,” says José Francisco Ávila, Chairman of the Garifuna Coalition. “The proclamations have allowed us to raise awareness; political equity is a seat in the chamber. We are moving beyond being ‘celebrated’ to being a ‘line item’ in the city’s budget and legislative priorities.”
The stakes have never been higher. With approximately 100,000 Garifuna residents calling the Bronx home, our community forms a powerful voting bloc. In a city where local elections are often decided by narrow margins, the Garifuna vote is no longer just a side factor—it’s the decisive factor.

As we near the June 23rd Primary Elections, the Coalition is mobilizing to make sure every Garifuna New Yorker recognizes their collective power. We are not just a “hidden voice”; we are the decisive voice that can shape the leadership of our boroughs and our city.
To support this move toward informed political engagement, the Garifuna Coalition is proud to introduce its strategic plan for mobilizing the Garifuna Vote.
The Garifuna journey has always been one of resilience— from the shores of St. Vincent to the streets of the Bronx. Now, that resilience must be shown at the ballot box.
Our Heritage is our foundation. Our Vote is our future.
